Honduras has six separate coffee-producing regions. Agalta is one of them and stretches across the country to the north-east, covering Olancho, where the COCAOL cooperative is located. The cooperative was founded in 1969 by a group of producers who wanted to develop the infrastructure of their farms, find new market channels and develop farm cooperation. In addition, the farmer members are actively involved in the conservation of the forest ecosystems in their area. Therefore, all their coffees are shade-grown and the farms follow environmentally friendly practices. The cooperative also encourages women to participate in coffee farming, sponsors youth training and provides training in agricultural best practices, and provides health and safety training for its members.
