El Salvador San Carlos
Kahwe
Roaster: Joel Marttala
The San Carlos cooperative began its activities in 1980 after the agricultural reforms in El Salvador. The reforms allocated land to small farmers and the farm, which is divided into 25 sections of 672 hectares, has a total of 126 members. It is also part of the Blue Harvest programme, which aims to reduce the problems of water scarcity. They were selected for the programme when Morazan was classified as an area at risk of famine. The members began implementing a plan to improve soil quality by replacing chemical fertilisers with organic fertilisers, and by regulating water use more systematically.
