Ishema Washing Station started operating in February 2014. The founder, Joy Ishema, has over a decade of experience of building coffee washing machines before starting her own washing station. Joy’s passion is to provide people a good workplace and create equal job opportunities for women in Rwanda.
The washing station is located at an altitude of 1372 meters at the intersection of three mountains. The coffee grows high on the slopes above 1600 meters and its quality is superb. In the future, as the farming methods get better, we can only expect the quality to be even better.
Joy’s washing station employs 30 women at the time of writing. These women receive a share of the profits generated by the washing station. The work has provided the women with money for food and better living conditions for their whole families. In the future, Joy intends to provide coffee that is completely grown, washed and processed by the women.
The coffee’s taste is pure and balanced. In the beginning you may find a pleasant acidity and a long, sweet aftertaste rounding the experience. Plums and pears are present in the taste.
