DROPP

DROPP
19.10.2017 Maria Ariyo

DROPP is a social enterprise that donates 100% of its profit to projects for a cleaner Baltic Sea. Founded by Amanda Sundell in 2014, DROPP has donated 60 000 euros to its partners and brought DROPP water to more than 300 cafes, restaurants and offices in Finland.

How did it all start?

It all started in 2014, when DROPP’s founder Amanda decided she wanted to do her bit to save the Baltic Sea and mobilise others in this effort too. Out kayaking in the Finnish archipelago, Amanda was struck by the particularly heavy algal blooms and felt compelled to find a way to make it easier for companies and individuals to get involved. And since Finns consume around 100 million litres of bottled water each year [that’s 18 litres per person!], changing this market and using it to generate good seemed like a good starting point.

So Amanda launched DROPP water in the summer of 2014 as a more sustainable option to other brands on the market – and of course one that donates all its profits to a cause close to the majority of Finn’s hearts.

What sets DROPP apart?

DROPP water is different. Amanda explains “We bring our customers the freshest spring water in the world (as defined by the UN) and we make sure we do everything we can to minimize our environmental impact.” She continues “DROPP is bottled by a family-owned company in Härkäneva, southern Ostrobothnia. The family we work with uses renewable energy to power operations, and they regularly audit the use of raw materials and resources to make sure the carbon footprint of all their products is diminishing. DROPP also works together with Opel to bring customers zero emissions deliveries. “Our delivery van is powered by Finnish biogas!”, she continues.

What has DROPP achieved so far?

So far DROPP has donated 60 000 euros to its partners who work tirelessly for a cleaner Baltic Sea. For maximum impact DROPP works with actors with a proven track record in achieving results: the Baltic Sea Action Group that has transformed the way companies, public actors and organisations work for the Baltic Sea, and the University of Helsinki that DROPP supports in ground-breaking marine research.

“We are extremely proud of the work our partners have achieved”, says Amanda. “The Baltic Sea Action Group has introduced sustainable farming practices on more than 25% of farmed land in Finland and advocated successfully for better environmental policy both nationally and internationally. The research we support at Helsinki University on the other hand helps us understand the impact of climate change and eutrophication on vulnerable coastal ecosystems.”
