Artisan Roasters

Artisan roasters are small and independent coffee roasters that focus on producing high-quality, specialty coffee. Unlike large industrial roasters, artisan roasters roast coffee beans in small batches, allowing for better control over the roasting process and the development of better flavours. Artisan roasters often source their green coffee directly from farmers, supporting fair trade and sustainable development. The passion and dedication to quality coffee of these roasters are evident in every cup, offering unique and diverse flavour experiences.

We are delighted to collaborate with numerous fantastic artisan roasteries. These partnerships not only bring diverse and high-quality coffee experiences to our customers but also support passionate entrepreneurs and the local coffee culture. Together, we can promote sustainable coffee production, innovation, and provide unique flavour experiences born from the dedication and expertise of artisan roasters. Every cup of coffee you enjoy supports small businesses and helps grow a vibrant coffee community.

Our blog features introductions of each of our partner roasters, so be sure to check out their stories here.

How is a small roaster defined?

There is no official definition of a small roaster, at least not yet, but the annual number of roasts is usually used as a measurement. The threshold is still difficult to define, but generally speaking, a small roaster is defined as a coffee roaster with roasting volumes well below those of industrial market coffee producers. According to some listings, small roasters typically produce between 5 000 and 20 000 kg of coffee per year, but the quantities are still very roaster-specific and may be below or above this. Some of the largest roasters process up to 10 million kilos of green coffee or more per year. A good example of this is that, at least in 2020, Helsingin Kahvipaahtimo’s full-year production has been more or less the same as Meira’s daily production (HS, 27 September 2020).

In summary, small coffee roasters are characterised by limited production capacity, an artisanal approach, a focus on quality and often a commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.

Variation in SLURP coffee experiences

Every SLURP delivery brings a new coffee experience! The changing roasters, seasonal coffees, and rotation of coffee selections ensure that you always get to taste something new and interesting.

We don’t offer the same coffee week after week because the world is full of different coffee varieties, roasters, and flavour profiles that you have the right to experience. Changing coffees bring excitement to every coffee moment, and at the same time, you can discover new favourites and expand your coffee knowledge. We believe that diversity and variation make your coffee experience richer and more delicious. The coffees do change within the limits of your chosen flavour preferences according to your order, but often the selection on supermarket shelves is limited, and the coffees have been sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore, the fact that the coffees change and arrive freshly roasted has been a highly appreciated feature among our customers.

SLURP currently collaborates with about 40 roasters in Finland, Germany, Japan, and SLURP rare partners in the Netherlands and Sweden. This amazing network ensures a wide range of interesting coffees. If you’re interested in the types of coffees we’ve delivered in our different services, you can find the subscription coffee information here.
