Burundi, also know as “The land of thousand hills”. A small country surrounded by Rwanda, Tanzania and Congo, their export consists almost exclusively of coffee. Due to their high growing grounds, the Burundian coffees are known for their clear acidity, sweetness and intensive mouthfeel.

The coffee comes from a washing station (Mbirizi) owned by Salum Ramadhan and it has been grown in the Kayanza province in the region of Mudusi. The Mbirizi station is the latest of Salum’s two stations, which was founded in 2014. The first crop was delivered already the next year. At the washing station, the coffee berries are separate by region and picking date after which the berries are floated and the ripe berries are picked by hand from still raw berries. After separating the washing and drying processes follow.

Nordic Approach has worked with Salum since 2011 and the co-operation has gone well. Salum is passionate at his work and wants to always improve his methods and educate his employees, which results in better production and higher quality of coffee. A higher quality also means a better price for the farmer for their product. Salum is also actively participating in developing the local educational system and environmental protection.

Mudusi is a wonderful new arrival, which works splendidly as an espresso as well as drip coffee. One can find yellow fruits, the acidity of grapefruit and refined spiciness in the flavour. With milk it’s like dry cake in the cup.
