Rwanda Muhondo
Cafetoria Roastery
Roasted: 27/04/2019
Roaster: Ivan Ore (Juanca)
Among tens of samples that our Roastmaster and founder Juanca Oré cupped at the World of Coffee in Amsterdam last year, this coffee from Rwanda that captivated him. Its whisky aroma and cola flavours were overwhelming. Many months passed before this coffee, the Rwanda Muhondo arrived to our roastery. We always tell to our customers that “We listen to the bean” and certainly this coffee has a lot to tell.
Our standard version is medium roasted with overwhelming notes of blueberries and cola. The flavours were so powerful, that we used it for the Finnish Brewer’s cup competition. However, this light roasted version for Slurp releases more notes of milk chocolate, berries and whisky. We also plan to release an espresso version. A prototype of this espresso placed 4th at the “Best Espresso of the Year” at the Helsinki Coffee Festival a couple of weeks ago. Certainly, this coffee demands a lot of attention and concentration.
About the technical stuff: the Muhondo washing station is owned by the Muhondo Coffee Company Ltd, and operate in the Muhondo Sector, Gakenke District in the Northern Province of Rwanda. The Washing station was built in 2006 by the Terimbere Kawa Yacu Cooperative but became fully operated by the Muhondo Coffee Company in 2013. The topographical conditions that give a particular coffee its profile and uniqueness have greatly contributed to the coffee quality which led Muhondos coffee to win the Rwanda Cup of Excellence on several occasions since the year 2014. The washing station is a small scale operation, but it has tremendously impacted the local communities through the employment of women and youth, contribution to farmer’s income and community involvement with social projects they have initiated such as farmer’s loan and clean water supply. 40% of the farmers working with the cooperative are women.
